I started my career as a U.S. Navy submarine officer, then traded the depths of the ocean for the world of global manufacturing. My career has taken me throughout Asia, and I've spent enough time there that I speak what I affectionately call "combat Mandarin"—just enough to navigate, order dinner, and occasionally surprise a local. (And yes, I know what Da Pang Pang means! 😄) China has become one of my favorite places to explore. I'm fascinated by its history and culture, and if you ask about my favorite dynasty, be prepared for an enthusiastic defense of the Song Dynasty. Most people expect me to say the Tang or the Ming, but I think the Song Dynasty doesn't get nearly enough credit. I've had the opportunity to visit around twenty cities across China so far, and every region has left a lasting impression on me. I've also spent time in Taiwan, which I loved for its warmth, history, and incredible food. Every trip reminds me how much more there is to learn. I've also learned that every province insists it has the best food and the richest history...and after all my travels, I'm convinced they are all right. When I'm not working, you'll usually find me near the water. I love cruises, beach vacations, and just about anything involving the ocean. I also enjoy wandering through historic sites, getting lost in a good book, perfecting my Russian Imperial Stout beer recipe, or hanging out with my dog.
